Description
The potato plant (Solanum tuberosum) is a member of the Solanaceae, or nightshade, family, a family of flowering plants that also includes the eggplant, mandrake, tomato, & petunia. Its starchy tubers (stem thickened for use as a storage organ), called potatoes, are one of the world’s most commonly grown & important food crops.
The potato is one of some 150 tuber-bearing species of the genus Solanum (a tuber is the swollen end of an underground stem).Potatoes are frequently served whole or mashed as a cooked vegetable & are also ground into potato flour. Powder is produced by grinding dried potato into fine powder.
